Coveo vs Bloomreach: Top Differences and Similarities (2026)

Jake Casto18 min read

Key Takeaways

  • Coveo is an enterprise relevance platform spanning commerce, service, and workplace search. Bloomreach is an enterprise commerce suite: search and merchandising, a CDP with marketing automation, and a headless CMS.
  • Neither is built only for Shopify. Both are multi-platform engines with a Shopify connector, and both have 0 Shopify App Store reviews.
  • Both gate their best AI. Coveo's semantic encoder is rep-enabled on the Enterprise plan, and Bloomreach's Loomi Search+ semantic search is Premium-only.
  • Both are quote-only and six-figure. Third-party data cites Coveo around $10,000 to $20,000 per month and Bloomreach around $181,000 a year.

Overview

These are two of the strongest enterprise discovery engines on the market. Where they part ways is the wider suite each one wraps around search.

Coveo is an enterprise AI relevance platform founded in 2005 and publicly traded on the TSX. It indexes many content sources into one cloud index and serves commerce, customer service, workplace, and website search from a single platform. It has been a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for Search and Product Discovery three years running.

Bloomreach is an enterprise Commerce Experience Cloud founded in 2009. It sells three products: Discovery for search and merchandising, Engagement for the CDP and marketing automation, and Content for the headless CMS. It is platform-agnostic across 175 or more integrations, and in 2026 it repositioned around "Loomi AI" agentic personalization.

Each one fits a company that wants an enterprise platform rather than a Shopify app. Below, every capability gets a verdict and a citation, with Bloomreach's reflecting its Standard Discovery tier.

Top differences between Coveo and Bloomreach

The verdicts below run on four levels: Yes works as stated, Gated needs a higher tier or a rep to switch on, Partial works with limits, No. Each is sourced in the sections that follow, and every one was verified in August 2026.

How does each engine find products?

Keyword search ships on every tier for each. Semantic search is the split. Neither one puts it in the base: Coveo needs a rep to switch its encoder on, and Bloomreach sells the vector layer as a higher tier.

Coveo runs hybrid lexical and vector retrieval. Its Catalog Semantic Encoder retrieves products by meaning through multilingual encoders and NLP. That capability is real and mature, but not in the base tier: the docs say to "contact your Coveo representative to enable" it, and Commerce is Enterprise-Platform-Plan-only.

Bloomreach's Standard "Loomi Search" handles the keyword work: spell correction, closest match, query relaxation, and autosuggest. The vector layer is a separate product. Loomi Search+ combines keyword and vector retrieval through Google Cloud Vertex AI, and the docs mark it a Premium tier feature.

Neither ships true camera-to-search on the base tier. Coveo requires a self-built third-party vision API, and Bloomreach's visual search is Premium and fashion-catalog-only.

  • Keyword search: included on every tier for both.
  • Semantic search: rep-enabled on Coveo, Premium on Bloomreach. Neither is in the base.
  • Image-to-search: self-built third-party on Coveo; Premium and fashion-only on Bloomreach.

How does each rank results?

Machine-learned behavioral ranking is table stakes here; each has it. The real question is which business metrics you can feed the model, and what that costs.

Coveo's Automatic Relevance Tuning learns from clicks, searches, and purchases, and Intent-Aware Product Ranking reranks in real time on detected shopping intent. On top, the Coveo Merchandising Hub blends weighted boost and bury rules over the ML score, and can feature high-margin or high-stock products, though return rate is not a documented ranking input.

Bloomreach's Adaptive Behavioral Ranking learns signal weights from clicks, add-to-carts, and purchases, and went generally available on all tiers in June 2026. The catch is which signals you can feed it. Standard blends four sitewide metrics; custom signals like offline revenue, forecasts, or reviews live in Ranking Studio, a Premium add-on.

So both include behavioral ranking, and both put the deepest business-metric ranking behind an upgrade or an add-on.

  • Coveo: ART and IAPR included, plus weighted merchandising rules; margin and inventory yes, return rate no.
  • Bloomreach: behavioral ranking on all tiers; business-metric signals on the Premium Ranking Studio.

Can merchandisers run each one without developers?

Merchandising is where each of these earns its keep. Each ships a no-code surface with drag-and-drop, and each still expects a developer for the storefront and the setup.

Coveo ships the Merchandising Hub, "designed with merchandisers in mind," with boost, bury, pin, and drag-and-drop sequencing, included in Coveo for Commerce. Rule scheduling covers boost and bury rules but not pin rules, and segment targeting through Audiences is partly beta or CSM-gated. Reaching the hub still means a developer-built Atomic or Headless storefront.

Bloomreach ships a full boost, bury, blocklist, and pin toolkit at Standard, plus a drag-and-drop Product Grid Editor for pinning and sequencing. Reviewers call the merchandising controls granular and flexible. The gap is grouping: keeping paired items together needs Group Merchandising, which is Premium.

This is a strength for each, and close to a tie. The merchandiser UI is a wash; what tips the decision is everything around it, the storefront build and the tier gating.

  • Coveo: a full Merchandising Hub is included, behind a developer-built storefront.
  • Bloomreach: deep rules and a visual grid at Standard; item grouping is Premium.

How well does each fit Shopify Plus?

On the Shopify surface, these two are near-twins, and not in a way that helps a Plus buyer. Each connects through an app, each carries 0 App Store reviews, and neither reads Shopify's product taxonomy natively.

Coveo's AI Search & Discovery app launched in March 2025, is free to install but requires a separate paid Coveo license, and has 0 reviews. It provisions GraphQL sources, flattens category into a delimited string, and does not ingest combined listings or bundles.

Bloomreach lists Shopify as one of 175 or more platforms. Its Discovery v2 app is free to install with 0 reviews, there is no headless support, no combined listings or bundles, and no native taxonomy ingestion.

None of this is a knock on the search itself. It is about the Shopify surface, which is new, unproven in public, and built on field mapping instead of native taxonomy on each side.

How do they handle Shopify Markets?

Add a second storefront and the index count climbs on both. Neither serves one catalog across markets, and Coveo adds a currency limit on top.

Coveo creates a separate source per market and language combination, duplicating each product per locale, and its Shopify app "only supports base currencies, not local currencies." Local per-region pricing is the defining capability of Shopify Markets, so base-currency-only is a real gap.

Bloomreach needs a separate catalog per market and language, each with its own domain key and feed pipeline. Currency conversion is supported, but the overhead scales multiplicatively: three markets across two languages means six catalogs to configure and keep in sync.

For teams that want a single index across Shopify Markets, the per-region model is operational drag on both, and Coveo's base-currency-only limit makes it the weaker of the two here.

Shopify Markets with local currency

Coveo: base currency only ❌

Bloomreach: catalog per market, currency conversion ⚠️

How fresh is the catalog on each?

Sync lag is the gap between the price on the PDP and the price in the catalog. On the Shopify connector, both engines pull batches rather than listening for a webhook.

Coveo's packaged Shopify app runs a 15-minute refresh and an hourly rescan; its Push API has a documented 2-to-5-minute floor. A newer native connector promising faster field updates is early access, not generally available.

Bloomreach's Shopify connector lists Delta Feeds as Not Supported, so a daily full feed is required. A GitHub reference architecture offers scheduled polling as often as every five minutes, but it is batch, not webhook.

For a flash sale, a price drop, or fast-moving inventory, both lag the live catalog. Coveo's 15-minute refresh is tighter than Bloomreach's daily-full-feed default, but neither is event-driven.

Near-real-time catalog sync

Coveo: 15-minute batch refresh ⚠️

Bloomreach: batch feed, delta unsupported ❌

Which is readier for AI shopping agents?

Each vendor is selling an agent story, and on each the depth sits away from the Shopify search product. Neither publishes a Discovery MCP server an outside assistant can call.

Coveo's bets are inside its own platform: Relevance Generative Answering, Conversational Product Discovery, and Coveo for Agentforce. The capabilities are real, but all of them are gated add-ons on the Enterprise plan, and no public MCP lets an outside assistant reach them.

Bloomreach is pushing an agentic personalization narrative and attributes its $260M ARR milestone to Loomi AI. But its Loomi Marketing Agent sits in Engagement, the marketing and CDP side, not in Discovery, and we found no published Discovery MCP-server contract.

The deeper question is what an agent actually sees. An agent that reads raw search is not the same as one that reads your merchandising rules and curation, which decides whether it recommends the products you want to sell.

  • Coveo: proprietary generative and agentic features, gated add-ons, no public MCP.
  • Bloomreach: strong agentic story, but on the marketing side; Discovery agent-readiness is thin.

What does each actually cost?

Six figures a year, quote-only, no self-serve, no free tier. On the commercial model these two are near-identical, and the best AI on each is an upgrade or an add-on.

Coveo is enterprise-contract-only, billed on Queries Per Month, with Commerce on the Enterprise Platform Plan only and semantic search and generative answering as add-ons.

Bloomreach's Discovery pricing page also says Request Pricing. Its model is a module fee plus a usage fee, driven by customers served, catalog size, and event volume.

  • Average contract: around $181,000 a year, up to about $430,000, per Vendr transaction data.
  • The gotcha: semantic search (Loomi Search+) and business-metric ranking (Ranking Studio) are Premium, so the entry tier does not include them.

Treat every figure here as a third-party estimate, not a vendor number.

What are customers saying?

Enterprise reviewers rate each one well. Bloomreach carries far more reviews, though most cover the whole suite rather than Discovery alone, while Coveo's are fewer and enterprise-heavy.

Coveo rates 4.5 on Gartner Peer Insights across 46 ratings and 4.3 on G2 across about 145, with 0 reviews on the Shopify App Store. Praise clusters on relevance quality, ML depth, and support. Gripes cluster on cost, consumption pricing, and a developer-heavy rollout.

"Coveo fits into our workflow as the core engine of our search. The AI-powered search actually helps our team by allowing users to search for products based on their preferences. This has increased our throughput time and the number of users engaged with our application, leading to more purchases." Lead Engineer at Adobe, PeerSpot

"Coveo provides an enterprise level AI and relevance platform but licensing model is challenging." IT reviewer, $30B+ firm, Gartner Peer Insights

Bloomreach rates roughly 4.6 on G2 across hundreds of reviews, 9.1 out of 10 on TrustRadius, and 4.8 on Capterra. On Gartner Peer Insights, Discovery specifically sits around 4.1, notably lower than the suite. Praise clusters on flexible merchandising and CSM support. Gripes cluster on cost, complexity, and support at scale.

"My overall experience of using Bloomreach has been fantastic. It's a very intuitive program, with great training documents and support from CSMs." Manager, Product Marketing, $250M to $500M retailer, Gartner Peer Insights

"The technical support is really poor. It is really hard to get information without escalation. There is no pro-active monitoring of usage and no bot detection mechanism." Director of Software Engineering, $1B to $3B retailer, Gartner Peer Insights

Read both sets with the context attached. Coveo's reviews are strong but come from large enterprise buyers, with no Shopify-merchant signal yet. Bloomreach's are broad but weighted toward Engagement, so Discovery scores lower than the suite headline.

Top similarities between Coveo and Bloomreach

The differences get the attention, but for a Shopify Plus buyer the overlap is where the harder truths sit. Six things are true of both.

Neither is built for Shopify

Both are platform-agnostic enterprise engines with a Shopify adapter. Coveo lists Shopify among 25-plus connectors and four solution areas, and Bloomreach among 175 or more platforms. Everything downstream, the taxonomy handling, the Markets model, the catalog sync, inherits that general-purpose design.

Both gate their best AI

Coveo's semantic encoder is rep-enabled and Commerce is Enterprise-plan-only. Bloomreach's Loomi Search+ and Ranking Studio are Premium. On either, the semantic search and business-metric ranking you are shopping for are not in the entry package.

Both are enterprise, quote-only, and six-figure

Neither publishes pricing or offers self-serve. Coveo runs around $10,000 to $20,000 a month by third-party estimate, and Vendr pegs Bloomreach near $181,000 a year. A serious deployment on either lands firmly in six figures.

Both shard a multi-market catalog

Shopify Markets and multilingual multiply overhead rather than running from one unified index. Coveo creates a source per market and language, and Bloomreach a catalog per market and language. Four regions means four or more parallel indexes or catalogs to merchandise on both.

Both are batch-oriented on catalog sync

Neither offers webhook-driven, seconds-level propagation on the Shopify connector. Coveo refreshes on a 15-minute cycle, and Bloomreach lists delta feeds as unsupported. For flash sales and fast inventory, both can lag the live catalog by minutes or more.

Both are capable, proven enterprise engines

This one is not a knock on either. Coveo is a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader, and Bloomreach powers 1,400-plus brands with strong review scores. Both do keyword search, faceting, autocomplete, behavioral ranking, and rules-based merchandising well. The decision comes down to fit and delivery on Shopify Plus, not to whether the core search works.

How to choose

On core discovery quality, both are strong enough that quality is not the tiebreaker. The call comes down to which wider suite you want, and how much of the best AI you are willing to buy up to. The detail most buyers underweight: the Shopify connector is an afterthought on both, so if Shopify Plus is your whole business, weight it heaviest, not least.

Choose Coveo if you need one relevance platform across commerce, customer service, and internal search, you have a search or development team, and you want the deepest ML ranking and grounded generative answering. Budget for the semantic add-on and the Enterprise plan.

Choose Bloomreach if you want one vendor across search, a CDP, marketing automation, and CMS, you have a merchandising team that wants deep visual control, and a six-figure suite contract fits your budget. Budget for the Premium tier if you want semantic search and business-metric ranking in the box.

Is there an option built only for Shopify Plus?

On the onboarding calls we run with Shopify Plus brands, these enterprise suites keep surfacing as the tool a team admired but could not justify once the Shopify fit was on the table. Coveo and Bloomreach are both multi-platform enterprise engines. If Shopify Plus is your only storefront, a native engine skips the field mapping, the per-region indexes, the batch feeds, and the tier gating that both of them carry. We built Layers for exactly that case.

Layers homepage: enterprise search and merchandising for Shopify Plus, trusted by merchants including gorjana and iRestore

What we do that neither of them does:

One example. 9-figure apparel brand Rainbow Shops moved to Layers. Their VP of eCommerce and Digital, David Cost, on the switch:

"Layers was the first time we were able to create some customization and essentially create the same kind of sort-orders that we were used to having in Salesforce. And we could see a pretty immediate impact on the conversion rate."

After the move, Rainbow Shops reported a 30% increase in conversion rate and now re-orders every collection page daily based on the last seven days of demand.

None of this beats seeing it on your own catalog. Book a demo and put Layers next to Coveo or Bloomreach on your real Shopify Plus queries.

When we are not your answer:

  • You are not on Shopify, or you run a multi-platform or headless stack. Coveo or Bloomreach fits better.
  • You want one vendor for search plus a CDP, marketing automation, and CMS. That is Bloomreach's suite play, not ours.
  • You need one relevance platform spanning commerce, customer service, and internal search. Coveo is built for that.
  • Your catalog is small enough that Shopify's native search still does the job.

FAQ

Is Coveo better than Bloomreach for ecommerce search? Coveo has the deeper pure-search ML stack, with behavioral ranking and grounded generative answering. Bloomreach pairs solid discovery with a CDP and marketing automation in one suite. The right pick depends on whether you want a relevance platform or a whole commerce cloud.

Which is more expensive, Coveo or Bloomreach? Both are quote-only and six-figure. Third-party data puts Coveo around $10,000 to $20,000 a month and Bloomreach around $181,000 a year, with a ceiling near $430,000. Both also gate their best AI behind an add-on or a Premium tier.

Do Coveo or Bloomreach work natively with Shopify Plus? Neither is Shopify-native. Both are multi-platform engines with a Shopify connector, both have 0 Shopify App Store reviews, and neither ingests Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy natively.

Does Coveo or Bloomreach include semantic search in the base plan? Neither. Coveo's Catalog Semantic Encoder is rep-enabled on the Enterprise plan, and Bloomreach's Loomi Search+ is Premium-only. Both include keyword search and behavioral ranking on the base tier.

Can ChatGPT or Claude connect to these platforms? Neither publishes a Discovery MCP server for outside assistants. Coveo's generative and agentic features are gated add-ons inside its own platform, and Bloomreach's Loomi agents sit on its marketing side.

Which handles Shopify Markets better? Neither serves one index across markets. Coveo supports base currency only and creates a source per locale, while Bloomreach supports currency conversion but needs a separate catalog per market and language. Both multiply overhead as you add regions.
